Bake Sale to Help Regent Park Children Go on Field Trips

IIn order to go to The Metro Zoo, Franklin Children’s Garden (on Centre Island) and take part in seed planting and a tour of Allan Gardens (with Green Thumbs Growing Kids), the kindergarten children in David Kruger’s Room 103 at Regent Park/Duke of York have been preparing for a Bake Sale. The project was the brainchild of student teacher Lillian Gouveia, who thought that these trips would add a great deal to the in-class learning experience. And since the students will be learning on all these trips, David (which he prefers to Mr. Kruger!) thinks they shouldn’t have to pay for the learning.

To help augment their $300 field trip budget, which is almost entirely eaten up by the cost of a bus, the children have been making and freezing Coffee Toffee Oatmeal Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Cookies, Triple Ginger Gingerbread, Mocha Caramel Latte Cheesecake and (Spicy) Flourless Brownies. In the process, they have been learning about the science behind baking, reading recipes, talking about baking vocabulary and terminology, shopping for ingredients at FreshCo, participating in focus group on all the items for sale (taste testing), creating ads for the sale, and baking, baking, baking.

David’s students come from Libya, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Viet Nam, Pakistan, China, Eritrea, Congo, Greece, Guyana, The Philippines, and Kenya.  Thanks to the Bake Sale they will get to see Toronto.

On Friday May 13, from 9:30 – 4:30, they will be selling these treats at Dave Carroll’s FreshCo at Dundas & Parliament. Dave Carroll has been very supportive of the idea from the beginning, and has dedicated some space inside his front doors for the children to set up and try to sell their little hearts out.  Dave says, “It’s great to meet the teachers and students, and building community.  As a local business owner, being included in the community is extremely rewarding.”

The Principal at Regent Park/Duke of York PS, Violet Mari, has also been very supportive of this “big idea” study and execution, as she sees the benefits of a project like this one.  “It is so important to create relevant, meaningful and engaging learning opportunities for students that are concrete and within their community.  Students learn better when they are able to have rich experiential learning experiences.  What is great about this initiative is that students are able to see the results of their hard work whilst giving back to their own community. ”

Orders can be made in advance via email (david.kruger@gmail.com) for pick-up at the sale or at a later/alternate date. Payment is cash only.  If you have a set amount that you want to spend, I can probably find a way to accommodate.  Chefs, foodies, farmers’ market managers, farmers, family, friends… they all rave about David’s baked goods.  His students say, “YUMMY!”, “DEEELICIOUS!!!”, “It’s so good, it grows legs.”, “These are the best cookies ever.”, “Superlicious.”, Yummy yummy in my tummy.”, “Super Good” and “Coffeelicious.”

Any funds in excess of what’s needed to fund the field trips, will go towards aiding the victims of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan, as two giant gingerbread cookies were already part of Toronto Bakes for Japan.
